Mythology Board Game Project: April 2009 Update!

Sun Apr 19, 2009, 6:10 PM
Holy Cow! Time sure flies!

I have been extremely busy lately working to improve my powerful D&D Character Sheet and my multiple D&D games (well, ok, also add the Wife + Kids to the mix!) that I have not taken much time to work on the Mythology Board Game project. So here is a résumé what I still need for the Cards.

At this stage, most cards are completed. Both the Heroes cards, and the Deity cards are ready! I still require a few images for Creatures cards and the Special cards... If you can help, let me know! (Note that the name of the author of each card is featured in the lower part of the card)

CREATURE CARDS:

Antaeus: EDIT: Completed by DAA-TRUTH [link]
Antaeus in Greek and Berber mythology was a giant of Libya, the son of Poseidon and Gaia, whose wife was Tinjis. He was extremely strong as long as he remained in contact with the ground (his mother earth), but once lifted into the air he became as weak as water. He would challenge all passers-by to wrestling matches, kill them, and collect their skulls, so that he might one day build out of them a temple to his father Poseidon. Heracles, finding that he could not beat Antaeus by throwing him to the ground, as he would regain his strength and be fortified, discovered the secret of his power (touching the ground) and held Antaeus aloft and crushed him in a bearhug.

What I am looking for: Well, as Antaeus was strong when connected to the ground, so it would be nice to have some kind of earth giant. For example, an image similar to this earth giant from DAA-TRUTH would be nice. Another excellent piece is the Giant by Beucephalus. Of course, any 'though' giant would probably do for this card.

EDIT: Brontes has been completed!
EDIT: Polyphemus has been completed!
Cyclops:
In Greek mythology and later Roman mythology, a cyclops, is a member of a primordial race of giants, each with a single eye in the middle of its forehead. The classical plural is cyclopes though the conventional plural cyclopses is also used in English. The name is widely thought to mean "circle-eyed"

What I am looking for: I actually need two images here. The first is the Cyclops Brontes and the other is the Cyclops Polyphemus. Examples of excellent images
for this would be the cyclops by sb51075. It would be awesome to have Cyclops that actually resembles each other as brothers would! Good rendition of Cyclops are quite hard to find...

Laelaps:
Laelaps was a Greek mythological dog who never failed to catch what he was hunting.

What I am looking for: It should be relatively easy to find a good Dog image that would fit this card.... I just need to look at the zillions ones available - unless you have one that would fit the bill?!

Teumessian fox: EDIT: Assigned to Wings-of-Shadow [link]
In Greek mythology, the Teumessian fox was a gigantic fox that was destined never to be caught.

What I am looking for: I found an excellent image for this, but alas the author was not willing to grant permission to use her work (well, her fee was way beyond my reach :( ). The image is called Riddle Me This by hibbary. That image is good because it captured the essence of the Teumessian fox, which is so good at not being found, that he would be laughing at anyone trying! Well, perhaps a regular Fox would do fine. There are so many of those...

SPECIAL CARDS:

Apple Of Discord:
An apple of discord (kallisti) is a reference to the Golden Apple of Discord which, according to Greek mythology, the goddess Eris said that she would give "to the fairest" at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, sparking a vanity-fueled dispute between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite that eventually led to the Trojan War. Thus, "apple of discord" became a euphemism for the core, kernel, or crux of an argument, or for a small matter that could lead to a bigger dispute.

What I am looking for: Well, a golden apple shouldn't be too though to find... preferably in a Greek context!

Earthquake
What I am looking for: An image showing the result of an Earthquake, preferably some Greek-like damage. Ruins might work, but they should not look too old!

Insect Swarm EDIT: Insect Swarm has been completed! [link]
What I am looking for: This card does damage to crops - so any image that clearly shows the devastation of crops/vegetation by swarms of (flying) insect would be good. A swarm of Locust would do the trick.

Mythology Board Game Project: Progress Report!

Fri Dec 28, 2007, 1:15 PM
Here is a small progress report on the components of the Mythology Board Game Project. I will give a quick breakdown of all components, and you can find my progress at the bottom of this message.

ART for GAME BOX: This is one very important image, that I will have to commission (when I am ready to get quotes, I will give top priority to those who have already contributed to the Game!). The image will have to capture the essence of the game, which is a conflict between six of the Deities! The back of the Box will most likely have a picture of the game, setup to play.

BOARD MAP: The Board Map is the first component to be completed! A small version can be seen in the Gallery.

CARDS: In the last few weeks, I have been focusing mainly on the deck of 50 cards, which all requires an image. Hopefully I will be able to complete this soon, so I can move on to another part of the Project. If I cannot easily find images for the missing cards, I will most likely reduce the deck to fewer cards. The original game had about 37 cards, so I am not worried about shaving off a few from the 50 card deck! Also, there is about 200 monsters, deities, heroes from Greek Mythology, so I can always get a new design up to replace cards that are too difficult to get images for.

COUNTERS: Those are the playing pieces that are placed on the Board Map. I am currently looking to make them 5/8" square, and 1"x5/8" for Galleys. This is the same size as the counters used in the "Civilization" board game...

ART for LOGO: I will require a Logo for the Game itself: But since I don't know exactly HOW it will be named [the Mythology name is already taken...], I cannot really get this done just yet. The Logo itself will appear in many places, like the Board Map, the Box itself, and perhaps on the back of all the cards...! Again, this will be a commission where contributors will get first priority.

DEITY RESUME SHEETS: These cards are given to each player and contains a nice résumé of the rules, and the powers each Deity has. They are very useful during play and greatly facilitate game play!

RULES: Well, the Rules of the game are pretty much written down! I just need to polish them to be as precise and easy to comprehend.

RULEBOOK: The Rulebook will contain the Rules, but in a format that is similar to existing games. This is what people will read when they get the game! So I expect it to be very well made, clear and have nice examples of play.

Progress

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Mythology Game Board Project!

Tue Nov 20, 2007, 6:13 PM
For many many years, my friends and I have been playing a board game based on the Greek Mythology. Since I have time on my hands (not having a 'job' helps...) I decided to try my hand at bringing this awesome game to market.

Many components are required; I started assembling a high quality prototype of the game on September 1st 2007. We used to play on a Hand Drawn map, and hand drawn cards!!

The most image-intensive part of this Project are the Cards, which require one image each. Scouring DeviantArt, I was able to find initial images - but these I can't actually use in the Board Game until I get the permission from the various authors!!

Hopefully, I'll be able to get those permissions and continue on this most difficult adventure!!

You are welcome to comment any Images & Cards!
I will be adding cards that are missing their Image, in the hopes of finding artwork for those.

Cheers!
